SUSTAINABLE HERITAGES: Urban Futures - Cultural Pasts
ISTANBUL
Işık University
6-8, July, 2026
Abstracts: 20 April, 2026 (Deadline)
CALL
The Architecture(s) & Urban Studies Call - Sustainability & Context - is intended to highlight work being done in the sustainable planning of the built environment as it relates to historical contexts.
The strand call is interested in how we deal with questions of social sustainability in the face of gentrification, over tourism and the environmental damage to historic sites by the commercialization of the heritage sector.
In examining these questions from the host city of Istanbul, this conference is located in a place that typifies the questions at play. Historically seen as the meeting point of Europe and Asia, Istanbul was an imperial centre for the Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman Empires. One of the most visited cities in the world, it was European Capital of Culture in 2010. With the centre of the city classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, it boasts iconic examples of both art and architecture.
However, it also suffers from the inevitable consequences: gentrification, pollution, the over-use of energy and local resources, and more.
Disciplines involved include, but are not limited to:
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, REGIONAL PLANNING, ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, URBAN SUSTAINABILITY, RESILIENCE PLANNING & more.
