LIVABLE TOWNS, CITIES, REGIONS - From Urban Conservation to Climate Action

University College Dublin

28-30 June, 2027

Abstracts: 15 July, 2026 (Early)

In-person + virtual

This conference seeks to explore cross disciplinary readings of sustainability. Specifically, it is interested in integrated readings of sustainability within the frameworks of other fields such as urban design or conservation.

The premise is that our existing urban fabrics, regional infrastructures, inherited buildings and historic neighbourhoods all shape the possibilities of sustainable change in contemporary life.

In this context, we argue that when we design, preserve and plan the places in which we live, we are dealing with an increasingly complex and interconnected problem. Whether it be conservation, planning or architecture, or questions of sustainable communities and climate change, the terrain on which we tread inevitably overlaps.

Examining the full range of issues that affect the livability and sustainability of our existing towns, cities and regions, this conference seeks interdisciplinary thinking. For example, it welcomes papers connecting the reuse of our existing urban fabrics with climate action; the linking of digital technologies to resilient design and urban management; the collaboration of communities with design professionals and the partnering of architects with environmental engineers, and more.
