AASA Learning & Teaching Research Grant 2026

Overview 

The AASA Learning & Teaching Research Grant program provides targeted support to assist academic staff of AASA member institutions – including affiliate members – to attend and present at the 2026 AASA/ACSA International Conference: Planetary Practice.

 Up to 10 grants of up to $1,000 each will be awarded to support travel and related costs for successful applicants.

Conference Dates: 8–11 July 2026, Brisbane, Australia

Application Deadline: 9:00 am AEST, Monday 23 February 2026

 The program’s objectives are to:

  • Increase accessibility to the conference for early- and mid-career researchers;

  • Increase the visibility and attendance of AASA member institutions at this key international forum.

  • Strengthen the learning and teaching research community across Australasia and neighbouring regions.

 

Eligibility 

Applicants must:

  • Be affiliated with an AASA full or affiliate member institution at the time of application;

  • Have an accepted abstract or project submission for presentation at the conference;

  • Intend to attend the conference in person to present their work.

Assessment process

 

Applications will be assessed by a selection committee comprising members of the AASA Executive. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in writing.

 

Key reminders for applicants

 

  • Ensure your application includes all three required components:

    • Attached the following files to the application:

      • Confirmation of acceptance from the Planetary Practice Conference Organisers

      • A copy of the accepted abstract or project summary

    • Complete a personal statement at the start of the application. The personal statements should not exceed 500 words in total. 

    • Complete all questions within the submission form below. 

  • Grant recipients must attend the conference in person to present their work.

  • The grant is intended to support participation costs (e.g., travel, registration, accommodation); recipients have full discretion over the use of funds.

Successful applicants will be notified by 23 March 2026. Grant funds will be disbursed following the signature of an MOU between AASA and the applicant.

Personal Statement

 Your personal statement (500 words max) should clearly address each of the selection criteria below. Use concise, direct language and provide specific examples wherever possible.

Quality and Relevance of the Abstract (40%)

  1. In one or two sentences, explain how your accepted abstract or project advances understanding of architecture’s role as a planetary practice.

  2. Highlight its connection to one or more conference themes:

    1.  Planetary Pedagogies

    2. Tools for Planetary Design

    3. Planetary Cultures

    4. Situated Practices at Scale

Impact of the Grant on attendance and engagement (40%)

  1. Explain why the grant is important for enabling your attendance and presentation (e.g., early- or mid-career status, limited institutional travel support, travel distance).

  2. Outline how attending the conference will benefit your professional development and how you plan to share insights with your colleagues or students.

Collaboration and Sector Engagement (20%)

  1. Mention any cross-institutional, cross-disciplinary, or international collaboration connected to your work.

  2. Briefly describe how your participation will help build networks across the AASA/ACSA community, especially in the Australasian, Oceania, or Southeast Asian regions.
