Position Overview


The University of Antwerp seeks a faculty member to strengthen teaching and research in interior architecture with a focus on materials, construction, and sustainability. Circular economy, regenerative design, and systems thinking are central to this role. The successful candidate will integrate sustainability into the curriculum, advance design-oriented research, and supervise students and PhD researchers.



Key Responsibilities


Education (40%)


    Teach courses in materials, construction, and sustainability (e.g., Materials 2, Construction 2).

    Lead design studios in Bachelor and Master programs (e.g., Bachelorproof, Specialized Practice).

    Supervise Bachelor and Master dissertations.

    Develop student-centred and competence-driven curricula.


Research (40%)


    Conduct high-quality research on construction, materials, and sustainable interior design.

    Initiate and coordinate research projects; acquire national and international funding.

    Publish in international journals and specialist literature.

    Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.


Services & Leadership (20%)


    Contribute to university, faculty, and societal service activities.

    Participate in committees, boards, and science communication.

    Provide leadership and mentoring in education and research.



Profile


    PhD in Interior Architecture, Architecture, Engineering, or related fields.

    Several years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.

    Strong research record in construction, material knowledge, and sustainable design.

    Experience in leading research projects; funding acquisition is a plus.

    Affinity for design-oriented education and practice.

    Leadership experience in education/research.

    Willingness to achieve CEFR B2 Dutch proficiency (C1 when teaching as course coordinator).


What We Offer


    Full-time appointment as senior academic staff (ZAP); tenure-track assistant professors may advance to permanent associate professor.

    Support for a four-year PhD project and €15,000 in research consumables.
