Project description
The iPAAST ARC Discovery Project builds on the existing Digital Archive of Queensland Architecture platform to incorporate 3D heritage data from diverse communities and develop best practice in enduring digital heritage methods and products.
We invite applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship as part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project ‘A Gamified 3D Cultural Heritage Platform for Archaeology and Architecture’ (i-PAAST) focused on tangible and intangible heritage elements in a regional Queensland city.
This research will integrate field data capture, architectural and 3D modelling, virtual and augmented reality, gamification, and digital heritage preservation to create an immersive and interactive reconstruction of historically significant sites.
The project will be supervised A/Prof. Kelly Greenop and Prof. John Macarthur and an external advisor from the broader project, as part of a larger ARC Discovery Project investigating the role of gamified digital heritage experiences in cultural research, preservation, and tourism. The successful applicant will receive specialised training in 3D laser scanning of historic sites.
Research environment
You will work within a multi-university ARC Discovery Project team to advance thinking on how digital heritage can be best created, shared and sustained over time. You will use 3D laser scanning equipment and modeling of heritage places (architectural and possibly landscapes or archaeological sites) to test best practice, and develop ways to share digital heritage interpretations of places. You will focus on a regional city in Queensland, and work with others to co-design a collection method for data, generate models and other digital assets (possibly interviews, mapping, and recreation ofnow-defunct locations).
Scholarship
This project is supported by the Research project scholarship.
